Who We Are

Billy Teefy, the founder and head instructor at Doghouse Goaltender Development, has been coaching youth hockey for 10 years and in a professional capacity since 2019. His focus shifted towards his passion 8 years ago when he began specializing in goaltender development. As his reputation grew amongst the local goaltending community, Billy took the opportunity to open Doghouse Goaltender Development. Currently, the Doghouse supports goaltenders and coaches in 5 separate associations and holds sessions with several private clients. When he’s not coaching, he can usually be found cheering on his kids at the rink, playing in his men’s league, or behind the counter at his pro shop Northern Edge Athletics. He loves geeking out over the latest gear and innovations and being a student of the position.

Why we do it

Our passion is to deliver quality coaching to all young goaltenders. We want to provide accessible options for associations, minor hockey coaches, and goalie parents that are tailored to their needs and budgets. Billy understands first hand what it’s like to not play the game due to financial limitations.

Billy strives to provide his clients with a cutting-edge experience, and therefore is a continual student of his profession. Billy holds a certification from the University of Florida in “The Science of Training Young Athletes” which he obtained in 2021. This course has helped shaped his approach by giving him a strong understanding of the long-term development models. As well as a working knowledge of the physical, mental, and physiological developmental stages of young athletes. Billy’s approach is also strongly based on early childhood development science and practices. He understands how individuals learn and creates an environment for each athlete to maximize their development by intentional scaffolding to maximise their movement vocabulary and understanding of the game. Additionally, he holds a level 2 goaltender certification form Hockey Alberta. He has also recently attended the 2024 IIHF International Goaltender Coaching Symposium as part of the World Juniors in Sweden. The symposium focused on topics such as identifying and developing talent, creating practice environments that allow game like situations, hip and joint health, and many other keynote discussions with professional coaches from around the world. This experience and the connections made in the world of global goaltending help shape Billy’s overall philosophy and approach to youth development.
